About Dr Spence

Dr. Christine SpenceChristine Spence obtained her doctorate degree (Psy.D) from the California School of Professional Psychology. She has worked in a variety of institutions: prisons, jails, schools, hospitals, group homes, assisted living and nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and private practices. Over the years, Dr. Spence has served both men and women, the young and the aged, people from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and individuals with developmental disabilities.

Dr. Spence is a Cognitive Behavioral Psychologist. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has received empirical support for its efficacy in the treatment of a variety of clinical and non-clinical problems, including but not limited to mood and anxiety disorders. Dr. Spence’s approach aims to influence dysfunctional emotions, behaviors and cognitions through a goal-oriented, systemic approach. She identifies and monitors thoughts, assumptions, beliefs and behaviors that accompany, and are related to, debilitating negative emotions that are inaccurate or simply unhelpful.

Dr. Spence’s goal is to create a supportive environment in which clients can explore their emotional needs and overcome barriers that limit them from reaching their full potential. She focuses on the “here and now” and symptom removal. Dr. Spence’s insight into a client’s strengths and weakness allows her the opportunity to help them model new behaviors, foster their development of healthier, more constructive emotions, and obtain a refreshed outlook on life. In a collaborative effort with the client, Dr. Spence is able to provide each individual with the necessary tools and guidance to overcome barriers, which then opens the door for an increase in self-esteem, potentially more satisfying relationships, and an improved quality of life.

Dr. Spence employs an open-minded approach to client’s wellness by taking into consideration the client’s sexual identity, work life, family tradition, cultural and spiritual beliefs. She has a good sense of humor which is evidenced by the sound of hearty laughter echoing from her office on many occasions. She believes laughter helps to lighten the tension and makes it easier to open up at times during a session when serious topics are being discussed. Laughter also just feels good to the soul.
