Your Mental Health: Time for a Checkup?

Your Mental Health: Time for a Checkup? by Danielle Bissette

{3:40 minutes to read} If you had a broken leg, would you ever not go to the doctor to get it examined? If your tooth cracks and you are in pain, would you ever not make an appointment to see the dentist? So, if you are struggling emotionally, why are you not looking for a psychologist, psychiatrist, or therapist to help?

Who can benefit from seeing a psychologist? If there is a discrepancy between what you are doing and what you want to be doing, and you feel you can’t change it on your own, therapy may be able to help you.

  • Are you avoiding events that you wish you could attend, because of your anxiety?
  • Are you slacking off at work and/or school because you are lacking motivation and feeling gloomy?
  • Are you just feeling stuck and can’t get out of it?

These are only some reasons why seeking therapy can change your life.

Seeing a therapist does not mean you are sick or “crazy.” It does not make you a bad person or cause you to feel something is seriously wrong with you. Seeking therapy means nothing more than you trying to better your life. Is there anything wrong with someone who wants to better their life, if things are not going as well as they would like?

Many people wait until they are at their breaking point or wait for a family member or friend who doesn’t know how to help them anymore recommend or make them see a therapist. Why not catch it before you hit rock bottom? The earlier you seek therapy the easier it will be for you to overcome your challenges.

Therapy also does not have to be a lifetime commitment. Many individuals are seen once a week or even bi-weekly for a few months before they feel that they have learned the techniques they need to better their life and feel comfortable doing it on their own.

So what do you need to do? If you feel that you might benefit from therapy, don’t wait. Search for a psychologist in your area that works with your current issues. Shop around! Don’t just pick the first one you see. Finding the right therapist will probably take some time and work, but it’s worth the effort.

It is important that you feel a connection with your therapist, as this is the person into whom you will be putting all your trust. You need to feel comfortable talking to this person about some difficult areas in your life, so take the time. It might not be an easy process, but it will be worth it.
